POSITION ON ISSUES

1) STRENGTHEN LABOR UNIONS-PROTECT COLLECTIVE BARGAINING

Survival of the middle class depends on the survival of labor unions.  Even the wages of non-union jobs benefit from the efforts of labor unions in an area.  It is only the fear of losing good workers to good-paying union jobs that keep non-union employers from paying exploitation and predatory wages.

2) REPEAL THE “RIGHT TO WORK” FOR LESS LEGISLATION

Republicans love to put misleading titles on legislation to hide their actual intent.  Right to work laws were passed to bleed unions of funds by giving employees the choice not to join their local union, yet let them receive all the benefits of union employees.  The true intent was to put the unions out of business and allow the businesses to lower wages and remove all rights from employees.

3) AFFORDABLE LIVABLE WAGES – MINIMUM WAGE $15.00 PER HOUR

Businesses that pay exploitation or predatory wages transfer the actual cost of their labor force to all taxpayers.  These workers often qualify for welfare, food stamps, and free medical, free dental, and earned income credit.  Earned income credit is a monetary supplement paid to low-income workers to keep them out of poverty.  These supplements can easily equal 2 or 3 times the amount they make from their employers, and the taxpayers pick up the bill.  Honestly, $15.00 per hour does not allow for a life with dignity, but it is a place to start.

“I pity the man who wants a coat so cheap that the man or woman that produces the cloth will starve in the process.” – Benjamin Harrison

“No business which depends for existence on paying less than living wages to its workers has any right to continue in this country.” – Franklin D. Roosevelt

4) AFFORDABLE HIGHER EDUCATION

Community Colleges, as well as technical, trade, or apprenticeship programs in Nevada, should be free.  We need to give our youth the means to lead productive, meaningful lives.  They need the skills to support themselves.  We need a program that not only includes scholarships but also includes a student loan payback program for recent graduates.  Too many graduates enter the workforce with a mountain of student loan debt.  Several states now offer lotto scholarships with part or all of the student tuition paid with the lotto. We need to do the same or let the casinos come up with an alternate plan if they insist on keeping the lotto out of Nevada.  The birth lottery (born into a rich family) should not determine whether you can afford a college education.

5) SUPPORT SOCIAL PROGRAMS THAT HELP THE POOR

We have a moral and social responsibility to help those that are struggling.  Imagine yourself in a position where you have given up hope, you see no future for yourself.  You cannot seem to get ahead, no matter how hard you try.  Maybe drugs are your escape, maybe alcohol is your escape.  Maybe you turn to crime, maybe you do whatever it takes to survive.  Maybe you have starving children to support.  I wonder how many people want to live someplace where people are desperate and guns are readily available thanks to the NRA and the Republicans that work for them?

6) OPPOSE LEGISLATION THAT ALLOWS DISCRIMINATION

Everyone deserves to be treated with dignity and respect.  Nobody should be able to discriminate based on his or her own personal beliefs.  Many people argue that not being allowed to discriminate violates their religious freedom.  Most of the time it is Rightwing Christians claiming a right to discriminate against members of the LGBTQ community.  However, mature Christians are not capable of discriminating, rather these are people trying to justify their bigotry using religion as an excuse.

 7) AFFORDABLE HEALTHCARE-EXPAND AFFORDABLE CARE

We must find ways to expand affordable or free healthcare to all Nevadans.

8) PROTECT THE CURRENT PERS RETIREMENT SYSTEM

State employees entered into employment with the state government under an implied or express contract.  Promises made to state employees must be kept.

9) SUPPORT THE NEVADA STATE EDUCATORS ASSOCIATION (NSEA)

Our future, Nevada’s future, is our youth.  We must give our full support to NSEA and it’s members, to whom we entrust the education of our young people.  Teachers are frequently underpaid and our classrooms are underfunded.  We need to listen to and support the NSEA.

10) SUPPORT EXPANSION OF CLEAN SOLAR ENERGY

We need to do our part to save our planet and turn our state into a “green” state.  We continue to destroy our planet.  We owe it to future generations to preserve our environment and our planet.

11) STRICT GUN LEGISLATION AND BETTER BACKGROUND CHECKS

Complacency and allegiance to the NRA and the gun lobby have put our nation, our state, our residents, and most importantly our youth at risk.  We must take a stand and pass strict gun legislation that includes thorough background checks.  We have seen enough precious lives ended in our country due to gun violence.
